Friday Five #33
After a week of being bombarded by PDA and the annual commercial ploy to make you buy chocolate and flowers, some of you might need a little “me” time. Friday Five to the rescue! Winter is hanging on for a few more weeks, most of us have colds or sinus infections, and we all need a reason to smile. Our favorite links this week certainly lifted our moods, and we hope they do the same for you.
1. Salgado’s Breathtaking View of Ethiopia - In most photos essays of Africa, photographers focus on the poverty and hopelessness of the society. But Sebastião Salgado is an award-winning photographer who is focusing on something else. Travelling into the highlands of northern Ethiopia, Salgado discovered what a beautiful and awe-inspiring place it truly is.
2. Nikita Nomerz Gives Architecture a Face - Nomerz is a Russian painter who’s adding a bit of interest to the landscape. By painting the sides of forgotten and derelict buildings, Nomerz utilizes aspects of architecture to create something truly unexpected.
3. Photorealistic Paintings From Alyssa Monks - Alyssa Monks is a painter from New Jersey who’s work looks hauntingly real. Using filters such as water, glass and steam, Monks distorts the human body for her portraiture in a new and interesting way that you won’t believe. (Note: some paintings are NSFW)
4. Hands – Up and Over It - Remember Cleary and Harding, the hand dancers who made this awesome video that landed them national fame and a McDonald’s commercial? Well, they aren’t done yet. Their newest video – “Hands” shows some of the resulting hype from their first video, and then KICKS you on your ass with sheer awesome. (Note: Actual dance starts around 2:15 but to me, the lead up is totally worth it.)
5. Finally our quote for the week:
“Creativity, as has been said, consists largely of rearranging what we know in order to find out what we do not know. Hence, to think creatively, we must be able to look afresh at what we normally take for granted.” – George Kneller
